Push to ‘eradicate’ drugs in Belvoir
BAMAG has said it is determined to remove the drugs problem in the area — even if that means handing over the name of every suspected dealer there.
Last week the PSNI carried out a search in the Castleboy area in Belvoir in which suspected class B drugs were found after the Belvoir and Milltown Action Group (BAMAG) handed over information provided to them.
Barry Wilson from BAMAG said that through its work on drugs it was given information indicating a possible drug supply chain in the area. After the group carried out its own initial enquiries and passed all relevant information to the PSNI, police carried out a search of an address and suspected class B drugs and other items were seized and removed for examination.
Mr Wilson said: “This is exactly what we as a group have been aiming for. If we as a community empower ourselves with the knowledge given to us by groups such as FASA (Forum for Action on Substance Abuse) on how to tackle the issues which pose a great threat to our young people then we can start to use that knowledge and power to our advantage in the fight against the drug dealers and ‘pied pipers’ who prey on the young and vulnerable within all communities.
“We have openly stated on numerous occasions that we will do all we can to eradicate the drug problem from our streets in Belvoir.
“If that means handing over the name of every suspected dealer then that is fine by us.”
Mr Wilson added: “BAMAG have campaigned against drug and alcohol abuse in our area for a long time.
“The community needs to see that when it works with the PSNI on major issues such as this the system does work and all credit must be given to Castlereagh community team for the support they offer all of the residents of the borough, along with Castlereagh Council and the Housing Executive.”
A PSNI spokeswoman said: “Police carried out a search of a house in the Castleboy area of Castlereagh on the evening of September 16. A 22-year-old male was arrested for drugs offences and later released pending report to the PPS.
“Suspected class B drugs and other items were seized and removed for examination.”
